Everything you need, nothing you don't

Posted by Alex on May 28th 2021

I can count on one hand the amount of times I've needed reel with any sort of drag on my 4 or 5wt rods. I'm glad there are still inexpensive click/pawl reels on the market from well known brands with a warranty. The zero is incredibly lightweight (almost too light in terms of balancing a rod which is a weird critique to have).

I'm not particularly easy on my gear, but the reel seems very solid for it's price and weight. We'll see how it holds up after a few years.

Great Take on a Classic Design - Buy with Confidence

Posted by Zach McGinn on Jan 16th 2020

I own several of these reels and keep coming back for more. It's a simple reel that functions as expected. Unlike a lot of the other click and pawl reels, this has a large arbor that helps keep your fly line less coiled. It does have a loud click sound on the retrieve, but who doesn't want everyone on the river to know they have a fish peeling line like crazy.

These reels balance lighter weight rods perfectly. I prefer to have the largest arbor possible. The Zero lets me upsize the reel to the rod (4.5 reel on a three-weight rod) since it weighs next to nothing.

Redington's warranty is excellent. I've had to send one Zerol back to Redington because the screw that holds the spring in place became stripped. They repaired and returned the reel within two weeks and even included a new pouch.

    Smooth, Lightweight & Looks Great!

Posted by James Gilbert on Jul 11th 2019

Smooth action. Great looks. Soooo lightweight. Color options a plus. Does what you want a reel to do - manage the line well, handle the fish, doesn't weight much, and looks great on the rod!

    Love The Reel!

Posted by Andrew Bartley on Mar 6th 2019

Love the reel. A great reel for the price. It really is almost weightless. The clicker drag system is finely tuned to the perfect resistance(for small stream trout). It's not adjustable which I would have realized if I wasn't so new to fly angling. It's a durable clicker not click and pawl which isn't adjustable. Just got it today and put it on a 7' 4wt and pulled in a few small crappie and it had great feel and action. Ready to hit the mountains and use it for some trouts. Hope this review is helpful.

    My go-to reel

Posted by Ben Purcell on Jun 6th 2018

I used a Zero in 4/5 when I was fishing small trout streams in the Eastern Sierras, bass lakes around San Francisco Bay, and a couple coastal rivers in Northern CA, all on an 8'6" 5wt. For those waters, you don't really need anything beyond what the Zero offers. The basic click-and-pawl design has not disappointed me for any small stream trout or fat pond bass.

I've now got two of these in 4/5, one for my 5wt and one for a 7'6" 3wt. I've found that due to the light weight, the 4/5 actually balances the shorter rod better than the 2/3, and the bigger spool will hold a microskagit rig better, for times when I want to throw streamers and bigger bass bugs on a small rod.

My one small issue is that the gap between the frame of the reel and the spool is a little large, and you have to be fairly diligent about keeping it free of debris. Other than that, no complaints! I'll likely wind up with another one for my 10' 3wt Euro Nymph setup.

    Simple the BEST!

Posted by Vsevolod Seredin on May 31st 2018

I'll begin the review of the reel with a list of its advantages.

-It is this simplicity of the device that is the main advantage of this reel - the number of parts is minimized. The technological process and the precision of manufacturing parts at the highest level.
-Extremely lightweight reel weight doesn't disturb the balance of the light class rod and allows you to make casts even the whole day. The weight of the reel is really impressive with its lightness.
-Spring loaded, clicker drag systems - for those who don't need an adjustable brake, for those who can manually control their reel and fly line. For fans of the old school. Sound of reel. He doesn't irritate me. If there is sound - the reel is in operation.
-Large arbor design. Very simple and fast replacement of the reels spool and change of direction left or right hand retrieve.
-Convenient, normal size rotary handle. Fantastic appearance and the presence of the nylon reel case. Simple the BEST!

No less surprising is the history of buying this reel. A few days after placing the order, I received a reply that that reel in sand color is not in stock. Money was returned to me. I was very upset about this. I was offered to buy the same black reel at the price of sand color reel, taking into account all my bonuses. It was a victory and a triumph of justice. I was in seventh heaven with happiness. Everything happened thanks to the presence of a Happiness Specialist in the AvidMax Team. Thank you very much Nichole!

I recommend this reel from this seller!

    Very light and built well!

Very light, I have used it once. Built well. Easy to use. My only beef would be the clicker is a bit loud. Love it.

    Great Minimalist Reel

Posted by Lorenzo on Jul 17th 2017

This is a very well designed lightweight reel. The simplicity of the click system paired with the remarkably light construction makes for a perfect trout reel. There is no need for a heavy drag system when fishing 2-5 weight rods for trout and bass. The drag systems push up overall weight and costs.

This is a better product than the classic click reels and is a fraction of the price of a Sage Click or Ross Colorado.

I use mine on a 2 wt glass rod and 3 wt single hand spey set up. I really dig this thing. Good job Redington.

Unbeatable for the price. A click & pall quality large arbor reel. Super light weight. Ideal for my 3 wt. small creek rod.
