In this week’s episode of Tying Tuesdays, watch as Brady Laher ties the Sprout Midge! The Sprout Midge is another one of those killer little midge imitations. Created by Bob Brooks of California, this pattern is versatile and meant to be a highly visible and trackable fly considering its size. This parachute-style dry/emerger can be tied with a chartreuse, orange, white or yellow post to maximize its visibility. Instinctual to a parachute pattern, the Sprout Midge is a low riding fly that will sit within the surface film in the bugs transition zone. Although this pattern is well suited to imitate a midge adult, it can easily be varied to imitate large mayflies. It can also be tied in larger sizes and used to fish stillwaters when Chironomids are on the move. Out on the water, it can easily be adapted with floatant to ride higher if necessary.
