    Best bang-for-your-buck on the market

Posted by Eric Johnson on Mar 30th 2022

When looking for your first vise, the number of options and "must haves" and "nice to haves" can be overwhelming. Do you buy a more basic vise or do you go premium? How important are things like rotary functions? Do I need to spend $700 to get a decent product? All of these questions and options tend to muddy the waters and can push people to either buy "the classic" vise that everyone thinks of when the start or, unfortunately, put off buying a vise altogether. (After all, people can go their entire lives without tying their own flies... the fish certainly don't seem to care.) As someone who's had to wade through all the information, options, and pros/cons (I'm an extremely stubborn person cursed an overly analytical mind), I can tell you that this vise, though not the best-of-the-best, is absolutely the highest value of any vise on the market.

    Pros:
The jaw is a versatile size for most uses, is adequately sturdy, and is easily adjusted.
The kit comes with both a table mount and a heavy pedestal for those with a preference.
The vice is full rotary and jaws have a provision to ensure that your hook shank is centerline to the axis of rotation. (Short, you can set it up to spin without wobbling all over the place like an out of balance tire)
The kit includes a carrying case, bobbin, hook/hackle gauge, rotary lever extension, and bobbin cradle.

    Cons:
Griffin made a point to focus of utility and not luxury, so the box is mass produced, the design is simple to the point of being quirky, and the materials used are only as strong or refined as they need to be to perform their roles. Nothing here is overbuilt and there are as many off the shelf components as Griffin could manage in order to meet the price point.
The main body of the vise (the part where the "axle" rotates to allow the rotary function to spin) mounts to the post on the side as opposed to the very bottom which can make the vice feel out of balance after you assemble it.
The design is utilitarian to the point that the end product is a little homely (Unlike high end vises like Regals , Renzetti's, and Dynakings which look just as good on the shelf as they do on the tying bench)

    Overall:
This vise has every feature a new tyer could possibly want at a price that is more than competitive.
I would not hesitate to buy this vise again or suggest it to any friend looking for their first vice. I works very well and gets you many features that you would have to pay far more for if buying a "big name" tying vise.
However, if you will only be happy spending your money on the most polished, overbuilt product you can find that will wow your peers and last far into the next century, you may want to look elsewhere.

TL;DR: This vise does everything you would want it to do but won't give the owner any bragging rights. So, buy it if you want all the features of wallet crippling products, but don't care if your neighbor thinks you're cool for having it.
