Lamson began in Ketchum, Idaho, in 1996, when a small team with a bike design background brought light, precise machining to fly fishing. They started as Waterworks, bought the Lamson name from Sage in 1998, and went by Lamson alone from 2023. Every reel is still assembled and checked in Boise, Idaho. AvidMax carries Lamson reels from the value-packed Liquid to the fully machined Speedster, Litespeed and Centerfire.
Why fish a Lamson reel?
Designed and assembled in Idaho
Lamson's founders came from the bike world, where every gram and every machined edge matters. Their first product was a fish-release tool, and reels soon followed. The company now designs all of its reels in-house and assembles and inspects every one at its facility in Boise, Idaho. Machined models are cut by U.S. machining partners, and the parts at the heart of the drag are made in the U.S. on every reel, including the more affordable Liquid and Remix. The crew tests gear on local rivers and takes regular saltwater trips to push the big-fish reels hard.
The sealed conical drag
Most disc drags stack flat plates. Lamson uses a pair of matched cones machined to precise angles. That shape packs the same friction surface into a smaller, lighter unit that is easier to seal against water and grit. The result is a smooth drag with almost no start-up inertia and nothing to grease. A large arbor keeps drag pressure steadier as line leaves the spool, and the Power Arm frame puts material right along the load path for stiffness without extra weight. The Centerfire steps up to the fully sealed Cobalt drag, rated IPX8 waterproof.
Which Lamson reel is right for you?
- Lamson Liquid S and Liquid S HD: A cast-frame reel with the sealed conical drag in sizes -3+ to -9+, a smart first step up from a click-and-pawl reel for fresh or salt water.
- Lamson Remix S and Remix S HD: A CNC-machined bar-stock frame paired with a cast spool, sized -3+ to -9+ for everything from trout on a 4 weight to redfish on a 9.
- Lamson Speedster S and Speedster S HD: A fully machined, narrow-spool reel built for fast line pickup in -3+ to -9+, with the full-frame HD version keeping thin running line in place for Euro nymphing and Spey.
- Lamson Litespeed F: Lamson's light, open, fully machined freshwater reel in -3+, -5+ and -7+, with a click-stop drag knob tuned for fine settings on light tippet.
- Lamson Centerfire: A fully machined workhorse in sizes 8, 10 and 12 with the waterproof Cobalt drag, built for salmon, steelhead and saltwater species.
- Lamson Guru E-Series: A -3+ full-frame Euro nymph reel with a glare-cutting finish and a three-piece weight kit to balance rods 10 feet and longer.
