Trout eat far more emergers than they eat duns, and the Para Emerger in BWO is built for the half of the hatch most fly boxes ignore. A conventional dry sits on top of the water on its hackle points. This one does something different: the hackle is wound horizontally around an upright post, so it lies flat in the surface film and lets the abdomen hang down into the water underneath. That is the posture of an insect halfway out of its shuck, and it is the one a feeding fish is actually looking at.

The blue-winged olive is the most dependable hatch on most trout water, coming off in cool, grey, drizzling conditions through spring and autumn when almost nothing else is moving. Those are the days worth fishing and the days a fish can afford to be selective. The parachute post keeps the fly trackable on a broken surface in poor light, which matters more than it sounds at these sizes.
