Overview

The Parachute Adams is the dry fly most often named when anglers are asked to pick one, and the Purple dressing is the version that keeps working after the standard grey has been shown to every fish in the run. The construction is unchanged: hackle wound flat around an upright post so the fly sits low and level in the film, with a clearly visible wing above it. That posture is why it takes fish that refuse a high-riding traditional dry.

Purple has quietly become one of the most trusted colours in trout fishing, and not as a novelty. Against a bright sky a purple body holds a darker, more defined silhouette than a grey one, and in low light or tea-stained water it stays readable when natural tones wash out. It is not imitating a purple insect. It is giving the fish the same familiar mayfly outline with more contrast behind it. Fish it as a searching dry over likely water, during a mixed hatch when nothing is clearly dominant, or as the buoyant end of a dry-dropper rig. Tied here in sizes 14 and 16.Read More +
