A great addition to my gear

Posted by Roger Stover on Jun 17th 2018

I’ve been able to use my new Rio Single Handed Spey (SHS) line a few times now, and find it to be a great addition to my gear. My default line of choice is a conventional WF6F but there are situations it isn’t optimal, and these are where the SHS excels. Specifically:
    1. Limited room for back cast—the SHS is weighted in a way that make roll and spey casting a breeze. I'm able to fish in spots that were a real problem with the conventional line.
    2. Windy conditions—just a couple of days ago I found myself in gusty wind and was wrapping my conventional line around myself too often. I put on the SHS and was able to overhead cast or spey cast without problem, and get it out to where I needed it to be quite easily.
    3. Quick, repeated casts with soft hackle—I love fishing soft hackles, casting into riffles and letting them swing through the seam. SHS is perfect for this. At the end of the swing I can usually just flip my flies right back into the riffle.
There’s one more thing I like and was not expecting: it works well presenting dry flies, as long as the leader and tippet are the right length.
This line isn’t cheap, but the value is there. In combination with my conventional line I’m much better prepared to maximize my time on the river and catch more fish.

    RIO single handed spey line

Posted by Earl MacKenzie on Sep 25th 2017

This is a great line for double handed trout spey applications where a more delicate presentation is needed. This line is very good for swinging soft hackles and other smaller flies. The taper and the integrated running line allow you to fish short without worrying about jamming the head/running line junction. The line also allows for virtually effortless overhead casts. The thick handling section and integrated running line make mending and swing control easy. Tight-line nymphing is also quite do-able to the length of the head. Turns over mono leaders and light polyleaders with no problems. This is now my go-to trout spey line in most situations. Super tough coating and a low stretch core - just about perfect

    Great performance

Posted by Steve Hamman #9378 on Oct 18th 2016

This line is exactly as advertised. I'm usually pretty skeptical of claims in advertising and was only hoping for a line that could help deliver my flies a little more accurately and further with roll casts. But this is a line that goes well beyond my expectations. This line has made sixty foot roll casts, and lots more distance with my mediocre snap T's, all with the accuracy that I wanted. When my free stone stream cleared out enough for some real backcasting, I was able to get very accurate casts with the distance I wanted and easily. All of this on my stiff-fast five-weight 9'Sage TCX and throwing #16-14 flies. All this line needs is for me to increase my skills. Thank you RIO!!!
