The Cortland Guide Series Freshwater is Cortland's everyday fast-action fly rod: lightweight 4-piece graphite built to stand up to wear and tear from anglers of every skill level, at a price that makes it a practical first rod, a step up for a progressing angler, or a backup and travel rod. Cortland rates it for trout streams and rivers, lakes and ponds, and warmwater and bigger fish from bass to pike and salmon, with dries, nymphs and streamers.

Every model has a cork grip, an aluminum reel seat with dual locking reel seat nuts and a Cordura rod tube. The 10' 4 wt adds a down-locking reel seat and a fighting butt, and the 9' 6 wt and 9' 8 wt also have fighting butts. We carry five models: an 8' and a 10' 4 wt, and 9' rods in 5, 6 and 8 wt.

620315 - 8' 4 wt

The shortest rod we carry in the series. An 8' 4 wt is easy to handle under trees and on small creeks, where casts are short and accurate.

Best for: small streams and creeks, light dries and nymphs.

Line pairing: A 4 wt weight-forward floating trout line. We recommend the RIO Elite Gold (WF4F) or the SA Amplitude Textured Double Taper (DT4F).

620322 - 10' 4 wt

The extra length helps you mend, hold line off the water and reach across seams. It is the only Guide Series Freshwater rod with a down-locking reel seat, and it has a fighting butt.

Best for: nymphing, high-sticking, bigger rivers, mending.

Line pairing: A 4 wt weight-forward floating line for dries and indicator rigs, or a Euro nymph line for tight-line fishing. We recommend the SA Mastery Euro Tactical Nymph (0.022 in level) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF4F).

The all-round trout rod in the series, with the range to fish dries, nymphs and small streamers on most rivers and lakes.

Best for: all-round trout fishing, dries to small streamers.

A step up for bigger flies, windy days and bass, with a fighting butt for leverage on larger fish.

The heaviest freshwater Guide rod, with a fighting butt, for the bass, pike and salmon Cortland lists for the series and for casting big streamers.

Best for: bass, pike, salmon, big streamers.

Line pairing: An 8 wt weight-forward floating line; a bass or streamer taper turns over big flies. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Titan Long Taper (WF8F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF8F).
