Douglas at AvidMax

Douglas Outdoors grew out of a family's fight to protect New York's Salmon River, and that love of healthy water still drives the company. Within a few years of building its first fly rods, Douglas took top honors in the Yellowstone Angler 5-weight and 6-weight Shootouts. AvidMax carries Douglas fly rods from the award-winning SKY G to the packable Upstream, and our staff can help you find the right fit.

Why fish a Douglas fly rod?

Born on New York's Salmon River

The idea for Douglas started with streamside talks on the Salmon River, where the Barclay family, who own the company, helped win an important conservation victory. They teamed up with experienced rod designers and engineers with one plan: build rods that are the best in their class at every price. It worked quickly. Douglas rods won Best Overall 5-Weight, Best Overall 6-Weight and Best Mid-Priced 6-Weight in Yellowstone Angler's well-known shootouts. Conservation, honest performance and fast warranty service are still at the center of how this family-run company does business.

Multi-modulus blanks and smart details

Douglas builds its premium rods on multi-modulus blanks, blending different grades of carbon to tune how each section bends and recovers. The SKY G adds G-Tec platelets in the blank and a tough G-Armour finish over a low-glare platinum color, plus titanium recoil guides and AAAA cork. The DXF Gen 2 uses minimal tip dampening for accuracy up close and at distance. Even small touches help on the water, like alignment dots that show line weight and an Upstream design with spigot ferrules that pack down to as many as six pieces.

Which Douglas fly rod is right for you?

  • Douglas SKY G: A moderate-fast, multi-modulus flagship with G-Tec platelets and titanium guides, offered from trout weights up to 12-weight, and its 8-weight was named Field & Stream's best overall saltwater fly rod.
  • Douglas DXF Gen 2: A light, sensitive moderate-fast rod for fresh and salt water, with a reverse half-wells grip on freshwater models and a full-wells grip on saltwater models.
  • Douglas Upstream: An ultralight 2- to 4-weight series with a slower, glass-like feel, spigot ferrules and 2-, 4- or 6-piece builds for small streams, hiking and travel.
  • Douglas ERA: A fast-action, budget-friendly rod that handles dry flies, nymph rigs and streamers, and makes a great first rod or dependable backup.
