Overview

The Umpqua Draggin Nymph in Olive is a thoughtfully designed fly pattern created by signature tyer Josh Smitherman. Originally developed to target Rio Grande Cichlids and carp in the slower waters of Texas creeks and rivers, this versatile nymph has proven effective for a wide range of species, including trout, bass, and various sunfish.

Inspired by a creek entomology presentation highlighting the abundance of dragonfly nymphs, Smitherman sought to create a pattern that addressed the shortcomings of existing designs. Many traditional dragonfly nymph patterns lacked the desired thickness and movement. To overcome this, the Draggin Nymph features a unique abdomen made from Senyo’s Laser Dub. This material choice was serendipitous; during a tying session, Smitherman discovered that lightly scorching the Laser Dub caused it to harden and fuse, creating a durable and realistic abdomen that mimics the segmented body of a dragonfly nymph.

To ensure the fly could be dragged along the bottom without frequent snags, a barbless jig hook was incorporated into the design. This not only reduces hang-ups but also prevents the hooks from tangling when stored together. The combination of these features results in a fly that offers both durability and lifelike movement, making it a valuable addition to any angler's fly box.Read More +
