There are three main fly rod design variables you want to consider when purchasing a new piece: rod length, rod action, and line weight.
Rod Length
Do you need a short or long rod? At AvidMax we offer a variety of fly rod lengths, from 5’9’’ to 15’ and everything in between. Longer fly rods are going to be more suited to roll casting, more efficient casters with long leaders, better at steering your fly through long drifts, better for nymphing, and provide better shock absorption which helps to reduce stress on tippet and knot strength. However, they offer less leverage on heavy fish and are harder to cast in the wind.
Short rods tend to offer a better pure casting experience, but are limited when it comes to roll casting or line mending. They cut well through the wind and tend to be much lighter than their longer counterparts. They also offer remarkable leverage for turning, lifting, and landing heavy fish, ideal for tarpon.
Rod Action
Rod “action” refers to the rate at which a rod recovers from flex, or more simply put, where the rod bends when pressure is applied to it. This rate of flex is measured in the back cast. The more bend, the more flexible the rod is. Quick recovery and longer cast distance can be found in a “fast action” rod which will bend in the top third or less of the rod. However, you’ll get a deeper bend, affecting the lower third of the rod into the handle, in a “slow action” rod which requires a more patient casting stroke.
Line Weight
Higher line weight rods reign supreme for landing heavy fish. They tend to perform better when casting larger flies into the wind and offer more power. A lower line weight rod is going to be much less fatiguing to cast. It will offer greater touch and better stealth on the water, ideal for landing spooky fish.
