Overview

Grillo's Hamburgler in Black is a foam attractor built to float hard, show up at distance, and get eaten by fish that have no particular reason to eat it. The body is closed-cell foam, which means it does not absorb water, does not need dressing every dozen casts, and does not sink after a fish has chewed on it. Rubber legs hang off either side and keep twitching on the surface even when the fly is sitting perfectly still, which is often exactly when the take comes.

The black body gives the strongest possible outline from below, and the bright post on top solves the other half of the problem: you can actually see where your fly is. Add the flash worked into the body and you have a pattern that is doing three jobs at once, none of them subtle. Fish it tight to banks and undercuts, through pocket water where a delicate dry would drown, or as the float on a dry-dropper rig, where the foam will carry a bead head nymph without going under.
