Description

Overview

The Redington Vice is a classically styled, fast-action fly rod that Redington designed to be easy for any angler to cast. Its multi-modulus carbon fiber blank recovers quickly after the cast, which helps you place the fly with accuracy and control, and the range runs from small creek rods to a 9 wt for the saltwater flats.

The blank is green, with black anodized snake guides, saltwater-grade components and an anodized machined aluminum reel seat with the model laser-etched on it, so you can tell your rods apart at a glance. Lighter models have a reversed half-wells cork grip; the 7 to 9 wt and the 10' nymphing rods have a full-wells grip with a fighting butt. Every Vice is 4-piece and comes in a Cordura rod tube with built-in dividers. We carry eleven models, from a 7'6" 3 wt to a 9' 9 wt.

Redington Vice Models

5-5021T-376-4 - 7'6" 3 wt

The shortest Vice, built for small creeks and smaller fish where a tight, accurate loop gets the fly under the brush and an open loop would not. It has the reversed half-wells cork grip and weighs about 2.3 oz.

Best for: small creeks, smaller fish, short accurate casts.

Line pairing: A 3 wt floating creek or double-taper line that loads a short rod at close range. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Creek Trout (WF3F) or the SA Amplitude Textured Double Taper (DT3F).

5-5021T-486-4 - 8'6" 4 wt

A spring creek rod. It loads quickly and recovers crisply, so you can put a dry fly in front of a spooky fish with accuracy. It has the reversed half-wells cork grip and weighs about 2.7 oz.

Best for: small water, spring creeks, accurate dry fly casting.

Line pairing: A 4 wt weight-forward floating trout line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF4F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF4F).

5-5021T-490-4 - 9' 4 wt

A 9' 4 wt for dry flies and light nymph rigs on clear water, where spooky trout and light tippets call for a rod that protects the tippet. It balances well in the hand, has the reversed half-wells cork grip and weighs about 2.8 oz.

Best for: dry flies, small nymphs, spooky trout in clear water.

Line pairing: A 4 wt weight-forward floating trout line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF4F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF4F).

5-5021T-4100-4 - 10' 4 wt

A dedicated nymphing rod. The tip is sensitive enough to show subtle strikes, and the blank does not fold when you cast a heavy nymph rig, so it works for both indicator fishing and European style nymphing. It has the full-wells cork grip with a fighting butt and weighs about 3.3 oz.

Best for: indicator nymphing, euro nymphing, heavy nymph rigs.

Line pairing: A euro nymph line for tight-line fishing, or a 4 wt weight-forward floating line for indicator rigs. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF4F) or the SA Mastery Euro Tactical Nymph (0.022 in level).

5-5021T-586-4 - 8'6" 5 wt

A shorter 5 wt that feels light in the hand and makes accurate presentations with tight loops, in calm air or wind. It has the reversed half-wells cork grip and weighs about 3.0 oz.

Best for: dry flies and nymphs, accurate presentations on smaller rivers.

Line pairing: A 5 wt weight-forward floating trout line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF5F) or the SA Amplitude Textured Infinity (WF5F).

5-5021T-590-4 - 9' 5 wt

The all-around Vice and the one to pick if you will own just one. It balances well in the hand and builds high line speed to cut the wind and throw tight loops, so it handles every trout fly in nearly any weather. Reviewers single out its accuracy at normal fishing distances. It has the reversed half-wells cork grip and weighs about 3.1 oz.

Best for: all-around trout fishing, dries to streamers.

Line pairing: A 5 wt weight-forward floating trout line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF5F) or the SA Amplitude Textured Infinity (WF5F).

5-5021T-5100-4 - 10' 5 wt

The extra length gives you better line control for long mends and nymph drifts, casts into the wind and turns over larger stonefly style nymphs. It has the full-wells cork grip with a fighting butt and weighs about 3.4 oz.

Best for: nymphing, long mends, larger nymphs, wind.

Line pairing: A 5 wt weight-forward floating line, or an intermediate line when you fish it on stillwater. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF5F) or the RIO Elite Gold (WF5F).

5-5021T-690-4 - 9' 6 wt

More power and loop control for larger flies and larger fish, from foam hoppers to bass poppers and light bonefish patterns, with the line speed to cut wind. This 9' 6 wt has the reversed half-wells cork grip, not a fighting butt, and weighs about 3.2 oz.

Best for: larger flies, larger fish, hoppers and poppers, wind.

Line pairing: A 6 wt weight-forward floating line, or a sink tip for streamers. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF6F) or the SA Amplitude Textured Trout Expert (WF6F).

5-5021T-790-4 - 9' 7 wt

One of the most versatile rods in the Vice range. It casts large, heavy flies and streamers and covers smallmouth, big brown trout, steelhead and smaller bonefish and snook. It has the full-wells cork grip with a fighting butt and weighs about 3.6 oz.

Best for: large flies and streamers, smallmouth, big trout, steelhead, light saltwater.

Line pairing: A 7 wt weight-forward floating line, a sink tip for streamers or a bonefish taper for the flats. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF7F) or the SA Amplitude Textured Bonefish (WF7F).

5-5021T-890-4 - 9' 8 wt

The go-to Vice for large or fast fish: bonefish, redfish, snook, stripers, baby tarpon, Alaskan salmon and smallmouth, and it has the backbone to cast sinking lines. It has the full-wells cork grip with a fighting butt and weighs about 3.9 oz.

Best for: bass, salmon, stripers, bonefish and redfish, sinking lines.

Line pairing: An 8 wt weight-forward floating line, a long-head taper for bass bugs and streamers or a saltwater taper for the flats. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Titan Long Taper (WF8F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Grand Slam (WF8F).

5-5021T-990-4 - 9' 9 wt

The heaviest Vice and a one-rod answer for the saltwater flats, from winter redfish and permit to golden dorado, salmon and trophy largemouth. It has the full-wells cork grip with a fighting butt and weighs about 4.1 oz.

Best for: saltwater flats, redfish, permit, salmon, trophy bass.

Line pairing: A 9 wt saltwater floating line built for the flats. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Grand Slam (WF9F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Tropical Jungle Titan (WF9F).

Vice vs Redington EDC

Both are fast-action, 4-piece Redington rods. The Vice has been in the lineup since 2016 and covers the widest spread of sizes we carry, from short 3 wt creek rods to a 9 wt for the salt. The Redington EDC came out in 2025 with a Nano Resin graphite blank, measurement marks on the blank and a hook keeper hidden in the reel seat, in 4 to 8 wt. Choose the Vice for a light creek rod, a 9 wt or the most size options; look at the EDC for the newer blank and its on-the-water extras.

For other Redington fly rods, see the Redington Classic Trout, the Redington Butter Stick, the Redington Wrangler and the Redington Big Game.
