Description
The Perdigón, meaning “shotgun pellet” in Spanish, is a modern nymph that departs from traditional fly-tying styles. Its origins trace back to France in the late 1980s, where anglers added metal balls and varnished bodies to nymphs to increase weight and improve sink rates.
The modern Perdigón emerged in Spain in the early 2000s when competitive angler José Carlos “Asturiano” Rodríguez began tying and fishing small, heavily weighted nymphs coated with nail polish. Originally nicknamed “Las Chinas” because the nail polish was often purchased in Chinese-owned stores, the flies were later renamed “Perdigones” after fellow angler Iñigo Urruzuno remarked that they looked like shotgun pellets.
Today, Perdigons are among the most popular nymph patterns worldwide, prized for their simplicity, durability, and ability to sink quickly into the strike zone.
