TFO NXT Black Label Combo fly rod and Reel Kit

The NXT Black Label series is designed to make fly fishing simple and affordable – TFO’s mission. And because TFO’s NXT series kits are the gold standard for fly fishing schools and educational programs across the United States, we consider it the most important product we make. Whether as a great gift for the aspiring fly angler or a superb back-up for the fisherman who has everything, the NXT Black Label quite simply offers the highest performance to price ratio of any fly fishing outfit available and it’s covered by TFO’s famous no-fault lifetime warranty. These high-performance fly fishing kits flatten the learning curve by making it easier and more rewarding to become an active participant in this sport of a lifetime. The foundation of the NXT Black Label is the TFO Pro II medium-fast blank which offers plenty of forgiveness for delicate presentations and cushioning light leaders but loads easily for longer casts into the wind. The rods are a handsome, matte black with half wells (5-weight) and full wells (8-weight) grips made from reconstituted cork for extreme durability. Aluminum oxide stripping guides, chromium-impregnated stainless-steel snake guides and an anodized aluminum up- locking reel seat make the NXT Black Label series great for chasing fish in fresh or saltwater. NXT Black Label series of kits include a matching cast aluminum NXT BLK II (5-weight) or III (8-weight) size reel with and a stainless-steel alternating disc drag system. The reel comes loaded with 20-pound Dacron backing, a premium weight forward floating line with welded front loop and looped leader. The 80-foot fly line is up-lined one line size to insure the angler quickly feels the rod load and can quickly deliver a fly. Unprecedented Value

This TFO combo has to be the best bang for you buck out there. The is well made, casts accurately and the handle is very comfortable. The rod seat is very secure as well. Plus it looks cool. The aluminum reel stands out against other combos that are plastic. The case is the cherry on top of an already stellar combo. Would recommend to not only beginners but to seasoned anglers as well.

So I'm relatively new to fly fishing and am on a pretty limited budget. I bought the 8wt for bonefishing (oio) in Hawaii. I am impressed with the entire outfit. The drag is smooth and the rod is responsive and casts well. I also like how it is ups pooled with a 9wt line. That really helped me feel the rod. I am saving my money so that I can get the 5wt set up as well. Lifetime warranty is a nice assurance as well. Nicely done TFO.

I did alot of researching and found this outfit to be the best setup for someone looking to spend around $200. Also very pleased with avidmax, great customer service and great prices. I will definitely be a returning customer.

    Good combo to start with

Posted by Robert Jones on Aug 28th 2021

I started with an old fiberglass rod before getting the TFO NXT Black Label. The TFO is obviously a faster action, but it is so much easier to cast compared to what I started with. There are plenty of line guides so you dont have to worry much about line sliding backwards. The reel is plenty smooth and the drag works great so far. For the price, I am fully satisfied with all that came in the combo.

The first day using it, I pulled in about a 3.5lb largemouth bass.

Just keep in mind what you plan to use it for, as the 9' length is longer than it sounds, especially if you try to use it in tight areas with a lot of trees.

    Great Price point for beginner

To start, this is my first fly rod purchase and attempt at fly fishing. My verbiage will also be wonky.
    I have the 5wt kit.

After watching a ton of Youtube and Orvis videos on casting while using a fly made from pipe cleaners I practiced in my back yard and at a city park pond with lots of space. I was able to identify problem areas from filming myself. I had trouble with piling the line up and the fly touching on the backcast. I slowly eliminate the frequency of these occurrences but struggled still. On a river finally I bumped into a local who watched me for a bit and gave some direction, he then tried my setup and was then able to give some more informed direction. His thought was the line was light and for a new person the feedback was lacking. His direction to correct that was just what I needed to prevent the piling up. I then tried his setup and he couldn't believe how well I was able to lay out the line. I told him I could feel his setup working and the line traveling.
His suggestion was for Rio Grand 5wt line which he said was more like a 5.5wt and would make the rod work a little more and allow me to feel its travel. More like the 6wt he had.
I landed 4 10"+ brook trout and fat ass 16" sea trout on my 3rd day of fishing.
What a difference that line made for me.
As for the fit and finish....Its beautiful. I couldn't find a flaw or blemish on the rod, the reel is solid and smooth and the finish is impeccable. The padded case is solid and well stitched.

I feel as a new person to this I've made a great purchase and the quality reflects the money I spent. No buyers remorse here.
