Overview
The Firecracker Stone was designed by Ryan Broder, an Umpqua signature tyer from the Northern Rockies, as a stonefly nymph for Euro nymphing on Rocky Mountain streams. He built it with selective trout in mind.
The body is slim and tightly wrapped so it sinks quickly and cuts through the current. Subtle flash, including a wing case that reflects light from every angle, attracts fish without spooking them. A scud hook paired with one of Umpqua's jig-style beads keeps the fly riding hook point up, so it bounces along the rocky bottoms where stonefly nymphs live with fewer snags.
Euro Specs
- Hook: Scud hook, rides point up. Sold barbed by the maker.
- Role: Anchor (point) fly, especially in the larger size.
How to Fish It
- Euro nymphing: fish it as the point fly with a smaller mayfly or caddis nymph 18 to 20 inches above.
- Pocket water and riffles: stoneflies live among rocks in fast water, so drift it tight to the bottom there.
- Seasons: stonefly nymphs are in the river year-round, and they become most active before the spring and early summer hatches.
- Indicator rig: it also works as the lead fly under an indicator.
Choosing Color and Size
Dark matches the large dark stoneflies like salmonflies. Golden matches golden stones and is a bit more visible.
Size 10 is the heavier anchor for fast, deep water. Size 12 is a better fit for smaller streams and moderate runs.
