Overview
The Jigged CDC Pheasant Tail is Umpqua's tungsten jig version of the Pheasant Tail Nymph, the classic created by English river keeper Frank Sawyer.
The original works because pheasant tail fibers have the color and fine segmentation of countless mayfly nymphs. This version adds a tungsten bead on a jig hook and a CDC collar. It sinks quickly, the CDC breathes in the current like legs, and the jig hook rides point up so it snags less along the bottom. It is a confidence fly for any trout stream.
Euro Specs
- Hook: Barbless jig hook, rides point up.
- Role: Anchor (point) fly in #12 and #14, dropper in #18.
How to Fish It
- Euro or tight-line: fish the larger sizes on the point and a lighter nymph on the dropper.
- Under an indicator: use it as the lead fly in a two-fly rig.
- Dry-dropper: hang a size 18 under a foam dry in shallow riffles.
- Hatches: Umpqua lists it for PMD and stonefly water, and a Pheasant Tail matches most mayfly nymphs.
Choosing Color and Size
Hot Orange adds a bright hotspot that helps fish find the fly in stained water or deep runs. Natural Pink keeps the natural pheasant tail look with a subtle pink accent.
Sizes 12 and 14 carry more weight for faster, deeper water. Size 18 matches small Baetis nymphs.
