Fly fishing Rod and Reel Cases
The best way to extend the life of your fly fishing equipment is proper storage and cleaning. When your gear is organized and in optimal condition, it allows you to be ready to go whenever the hatch is on or the run is underway.
We stock a wide selection of quality cases and maintenance products for rods, reels, and accessories to suit any budget and purpose.
Maintain your fly fishing gear for long- and short-term storage
After each use, remove flies and indicators from your leader and tippet. Rinse your rod and reel with clean tap water.
If you'll be storing your gear for an extended period of time, we recommend unspooling your line and backing. This is a good time to clean any grit and debris from your reel components and guides, clean and dress your line, and ensure your backing is thoroughly dry. Make sure you are never storing your gear while it is still damp from being out on the water.
Use a soft toothbrush and a biodegradable, alcohol-free household cleaner to clean your rod, reel, and spools, and apply gear lubricant to the reel's moving parts. Remove the excess with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth. You can also use a cotton swab to clean rod ferrules, and apply ferrule wax to the male section of each joint.
Once your equipment is clean and dry, reload your reel before storing all your components in their protective cases.
Choosing the right fly rod and reel storage products
While modern alloys and synthetics lend durability to modern fly fishing gear, your equipment is still at risk of damage if it's not protected by the right storage system. Quality gear can last for years or even a lifetime when maintained, cleaned and stored properly.
Here are the basic types of fly rod and reel storage products, designed to protect your equipment for a few days, stowing your gear for the season, or packing it for travel.
-
Fabric drawstring reel bags: We like to think of these as "base layers" for reels and can be stored within more substantial cases, adding an extra barrier against dust, grit, and debris.
-
Mesh reel cases: Excellent for short-term storage, these allow your reel and line to air-dry.
-
Neoprene reel cases: Neoprene padding protects your reels from dings and drops. As a bonus, neoprene floats.
-
Multi-reel cases: Store and transport your collection of fly reels and extra spools in padded, reinforced carry cases with accessory pockets and reconfigurable dividers. These can be great options when you’re bringing gear options with you for fishing different fish species as well as space for extra accessories.
-
Rod socks: Keep grit or other gear from damaging your rod with this primary protective layer.
-
Rod bags: Slip each rod segment into its own sleeve, and roll them up. These are a must for any multi-section rod, whether you're storing it in a hard or soft outer case.
-
Reel/rod combo cases: Great for stashing your setup for easy access, these accommodate rods with their reels attached.
-
Rigid rod cases: Constructed of PVC tubing covered in durable nylon fabric, rigid fly rod cases are ideal for long-term storage and travel.
