Jack Dennis tied the first Amy's Ant for the Jackson Hole One Fly, a contest where your fly has to survive the whole day or you are finished. That single constraint shaped everything about it. The pattern went on to win the individual fly honour and led the winning team, and it has been a Western foam staple ever since. The original Olive was called the Fall Stone in 1999; the Red came shortly afterwards at the request of shop guides and has been the best-selling colour since.

Built to be, in Dennis's own framing, bomb proof. One fly takes repeated hookups without coming apart, which is exactly what a competition format demands and what a hard day on a freestone quietly requires too. It lands wing-up and hook-down every time, so it fishes correctly on the cast rather than after a mend, and the under-wing spray of rainbow flash is the detail that separates it from every other foam attractor.
