Overview

The Orvis Helios D is the distance side of Orvis's flagship Helios family, built in Manchester, Vermont. D stands for Distance: Orvis built it for increased line speed and lifting power, for casting big flies in wind and for fish that run under the boat. It is the go-everywhere, fish-anything Helios, from trout rivers and stillwater to double-hauling on the flats and bluewater big game.

The current Helios launched in 2024 as the fourth generation of the series, and Orvis says it is more accurate, stronger and lighter than the Helios 3. The D has a fast action with reserve power for shooting line, a matte midnight black blank, titanium guides with silicon carbide stripping guide inserts, and an anodized aluminum reel seat, with burled wood inserts on the trout models and all-aluminum seats on the big-game rods. The 8'5" Quick Shot models load fast for tight quarters on boats and flats.

Helios D vs Helios F

The Helios D is built for distance, line speed and lifting power. The Orvis Helios F is the Finesse side of the family, with a softer, more sensitive action for delicate presentations, mending and tippet protection. Choose the D for wind, big flies, big water and saltwater; choose the F for technical trout fishing. The Orvis Recon brings Helios construction to a lower price.
