Overview

The Better Foam Caddis is a foam caddis dry in Umpqua's Kingrey lineup, built to ride low in the water like a real caddis. Foam keeps it floating fish after fish without the constant drying that hair and hackle flies need.

Adult caddis sit low on the surface with their wings tented over their bodies. A low-riding foam fly gives trout that same profile, and it floats well enough to carry a small dropper, which is handy during a caddis hatch when fish are also eating pupae below the surface.

How to Fish It

• Dead drift: drift it through riffles and seams where trout are rising to caddis.
• Dry-dropper: hang a small caddis pupa or soft hackle 12 to 18 inches below.
• Evening twitch: a small twitch can trigger fish during egg-laying.
• Tippet: 5X or 6X for these small sizes.

Choosing Color and Size

Black matches dark caddis like the Mother's Day caddis and is easy to see in glare. Olive matches green-bodied caddis.

Size 16 covers most caddis hatches, and 18 is for small caddis on flat, clear water.
