Overview
The Halo Shrimp comes from Umpqua signature tyer Capt. Dave Chouinard, and Umpqua calls it the lightest-landing, hook-up shrimp pattern on the market. He designed it for tailing bonefish, where a fly that lands hard sends fish running.
A center-mounted Jig Bomb bead balances the fly so it lands softly, hovers and rides hook point up. Besides bonefish, anglers use it to sight-cast to other flats species and to fish under dock lights at night.
How to Fish It
- Tailing bonefish: drop it softly a few feet from the fish and let it hover down.
- Short strips: slow, short strips imitate a shrimp moving along the bottom.
- Dock lights: drift or slow-strip it through the light at night for snook and other fish.
- Strip-set: always set with a strip, not a rod lift.
Choosing Color and Size
Grizzly has a natural, barred look that suits mottled bottoms and many shrimp species. Size 6 is for very shallow water and spooky fish; size 4 sinks a bit faster for slightly deeper water or wind.
