Overview
The Dancin' Ricky is a simple foam dry from Umpqua signature tyer Andrew Grillos. In his words, the body and legs hang down in the water a bit while the wings and thorax stay afloat, giving it a low, natural posture.
It is built to cover hoppers, stoneflies and general foam attractor fishing, and it is listed for water from Colorado to the Henry's Fork and Patagonia. Grillos intended a small, medium and large lineup, and it works from big Salmonfly hatches down to small summer terrestrials.
How to Fish It
- Stonefly hatch: drift it tight to the banks and willows where adult stones fall in.
- Hopper season: land it softly near grassy banks and undercuts.
- Dry-dropper: larger sizes carry a bead-head nymph 18 to 30 inches below.
- Floatant: treat it with a dry-shake floatant to keep it riding for hours.
Choosing Color and Size
Salmonfly matches the big orange stonefly hatch. Brown Tan covers hoppers and golden stones. Black is a strong silhouette for crickets and dark stones, and Purple is an attractor color that trout often eat when nothing is hatching.
Size 4 is for Salmonflies and big water, 10 is the all-around hopper and stonefly size, and 14 and 16 are for small terrestrials and pressured fish.
