Description
Overview
The Dump Truck was born in the greater Yellowstone region and designed by Umpqua signature tyer Nate Horner. It is a foam terrestrial built to ride high on the water and float all day.
A foam layer under the body and a big poly wing make it a durable imitation of hoppers and stoneflies and a dependable attractor when fish are looking up for something large. Horner fishes it on everything from big freestone rivers to small backcountry creeks, alone or as the top fly of a dry-dropper rig.
How to Fish It
- Bank shots: slap it down tight to grassy banks and undercuts in summer, when hoppers are falling in.
- Dry-dropper: its foam body supports a bead-head nymph hung 2 to 3 feet below.
- Pocket water: it stays afloat in broken water where smaller dries drown.
- Stonefly hatches: fish the larger sizes during summer stonefly activity on freestone rivers.
Choosing Color and Size
Brown/Tan is the natural hopper and stonefly color for most rivers. Purple/Black is a darker attractor with a strong silhouette that stands out against a bright sky.
Use size 8 for big hoppers and stoneflies, size 10 as an all-around size, and size 12 for small water and pickier fish.
