Overview

The Scott GT is the newest generation of Scott's G Series, the moderate-action trout rods Scott has built for nearly 50 years. GT rods are graphite, handcrafted in Montrose, Colorado, and each is hand inscribed and serial numbered. Scott lists them as a medium flex with fast recovery: smooth and progressive, with tremendous feedback and excellent tippet protection, but crisper and more stable than earlier G rods.

Thinner-walled X-Core blanks, ARC2 fibers and a redesigned hollow internal ferrule that is up to 20% lighter make the GT lighter and sportier than the G Series it replaces. The 8'10" models take over from both the old 8'8" and 9' rods and swing as light as the 8'8", and the 9'8" models deliver extra reach without feeling tip heavy. The result is a rod built for touch: technical dry flies, light tippets, roll casts and line control.

Small streams and creeks: GT7434 (7'4" 3 wt).

Hike-in and travel: GT8435 (8'4" 3 wt) or GT8445 (8'4" 4 wt), both 5-piece.

Technical dry flies on fine tippet: GT81034 (8'10" 3 wt).

GT7434 - 7'4" 3 wt

Scott's first short graphite creek rod in years. It has a deep flex and a touch-sensitive tip, with more line speed and accuracy than glass, and it puts dries and dry-droppers into tight pockets and along grassy banks from 10 to 30 feet. Light in hand with no tip heaviness, it is a playful small-stream rod.

Best for: small streams, brushy creeks, close-range dries and dry-droppers.

GT8435 - 8'4" 3 wt 5-piece

A packable 3 wt for hike-in streams and lakes that casts so smoothly you would not guess it is a 5-piece. It has a predictable rhythm, casts soft or with real line speed, and holds its form out to 40 feet, which suits technical dries on long leaders.

Best for: backpacking and bike-in water, small lakes, technical dries.

GT81034 - 8'10" 3 wt

Scott calls it the finest technical dry fly 3 wt it has built. It is light and airy in hand with clean, bounce-free tip recovery, mends well, and protects 7X tippet during midge and trico hatches, yet it can still handle a hopper-dropper.

Best for: technical dry flies, midge and trico hatches, spring creeks.

GT8445 - 8'4" 4 wt 5-piece

A supple, well-balanced travel 4 wt for mixed techniques on small to medium streams and lakes. It flexes deep for tight loops up close, stays springy and stable at mid range, and is confident at distance with nymphs, dries or small streamers.

Best for: travel and backcountry trips, mixed techniques on small to medium water.

GT81044 - 8'10" 4 wt

The all-round trout 4 wt: a sensitive tip with smooth, even power that is precise from your boot tops out to 60 feet. It swings as light as the classic 8'8" G Series 4 wt but adds reach and distance, and it handles dries at every range, micro nymphs, high-sticking and light dry-droppers.

Best for: all-round trout fishing with dries, light nymphs and dry-droppers.

GT9844 - 9'8" 4 wt

Built for technical nymphing and tricky tailwaters, with extra reach for long, drag-free drifts on light tippet. It flexes deep while staying connected to the line, mends easily and protects very fine tippet, and it is best with a true-to-weight, long-head line.

Best for: technical nymphing, tailwaters, long drag-free drifts.

GT81054 - 8'10" 5 wt

Scott's one-rod 5 wt, covering everything from heavier nymph rigs to delicate midge hatches, from a drift boat or wading. It flexes evenly through the top three quarters, casts gentle open loops or crisp tight ones, and feels unburdened in hand.

Best for: one rod for most trout water, dries to double nymph rigs.

GT9854FB - 9'8" 5 wt with fighting butt

Made for big water nymphing, single-hand spey casts and stillwater. It is rangy and effortless from 20 to 55 feet with no tip flop and swings lighter than a typical 10-foot rod, so long roll casts and long-drift nymphing on fine tippet come easily. It is the only GT with a fighting butt.

Best for: big rivers, stillwater and alpine lakes, long roll casts, long-drift nymphing.

GT81064 - 8'10" 6 wt

The drift boat rod of the series, for a big foam dry with two weighted nymphs, salmonfly hatches and streamers. It has a quicker tempo than the previous G Series 6 wt and holds line high on the backcast, while staying lighter and deeper-flexing than most 6 weights.

Best for: drift boats, big dries and dry-droppers, streamers, deep wading.

GT vs Centric vs Session vs F Series

GT is Scott's moderate-action series, the one to choose for touch, feel and precise presentation: technical dries, light tippet, roll casting and mending.

Scott Centric is Scott's premium fast-action freshwater rod, noticeably stiffer, for more line speed and distance. The two share the same resin formulation.

Scott Session is a versatile fast-with-feel rod at a lower price, a good choice if you want one rod for every technique.

Scott F Series is fiberglass and the most specialized small-creek rod in the lineup. Choose the GT7434 for graphite line speed in the same small water.
