The Dispatch Kit from Temple Fork Outfitters (TFO) is a complete fly fishing outfit for anglers who want to learn the right way from the start, with gear they will not outgrow after one season. It pairs the moderate-fast Dispatch fly rod with the matched Dispatch reel, already rigged with backing, fly line and a leader, so it is ready to fish out of the box. New for 2025, TFO says the Dispatch Kit was named Best Freshwater Combo Kit in the 2026 Fly Fishing Show Consumer Choice Awards.

The rod loads smoothly and predictably, which helps you feel your casting timing, with enough recovery for bigger flies and wind. The reel has a fully sealed drag and a large arbor. The whole outfit travels in a Cordura rod and reel carrier, which also makes it a handy travel or teaching setup. We carry all four sizes TFO makes: an 8'6" 4 wt and 9' kits in 5, 6 and 8 wt.

Which Dispatch Kit Should You Choose?

Smaller streams and technical dry fly work: TF 04 86 4 DH K (8'6" 4 wt).

The all-around trout setup: TF 05 90 4 DH K (9' 5 wt).

Larger trout, heavier rigs and windy conditions: TF 06 90 4 DH K (9' 6 wt).

Bass, streamers and light saltwater: TF 08 90 4 DH K (9' 8 wt with the fighting butt).

Dispatch Kit vs Dispatch Rod

The kit uses the same rod as the TFO Dispatch Rod, which comes on its own with a rod sock. The kit adds the Dispatch reel, backing, line, leader and the Cordura carrier, all matched and rigged. If you already own a reel and line, the rod alone is the simpler buy. TFO also makes the TFO Pilot Kit.

Is the Dispatch Kit good for beginners?

Yes. TFO built it for anglers who want to start seriously, with a rod that helps develop casting skill instead of an overly stiff beginner rod.

Is it ready to fish?

Yes. The reel comes rigged with backing, a looped two-tone fly line and a tapered leader. Add a fly and go.

What do Handle A and Handle B mean?

Handle A is a half-wells cork grip with no fighting butt, on the 4, 5 and 6 wt kits. Handle B is a full-wells cork grip with a fighting butt, on the 8 wt kit.

What is the warranty?

The Dispatch rod is covered by the TFO Full Lifetime Warranty. For the registered owner, TFO repairs or replaces a rod that breaks because of a defect in materials or workmanship. Accidents and normal wear are handled for a replacement fee. Register your rod with TFO.

Which weight should I choose?

The 9' 5 wt for most trout fishing, the 8'6" 4 wt for small streams and dry flies, the 9' 6 wt for bigger trout and wind, and the 9' 8 wt for bass, streamers and light salt water.
