Overview

The Legacy is the extra-fast freshwater fly rod Temple Fork Outfitters (TFO) introduced in 2026 for experienced anglers who want distance, accuracy and power. It succeeds the earlier LK Legacy, and TFO named it as a tribute to that rod and to its longtime friend Lefty Kreh. TFO aims it at trout, steelhead, bass and carp on big, windy rivers, tailwaters, spring creeks and stillwater, and pitches it as the distance and power rod to pair with a moderate or moderate-fast rod you already use up close. Per TFO, the Legacy won Best Fly Fishing Product at the 2026 Australian Fishing Trade Association People's Choice Awards.

The matte grey carbon blank is reinforced with a Kevlar weave that keeps it from ovaling under load so it tracks straight, and graphene through the blank speeds recovery and damps vibration without adding measurable weight, per TFO. Black SiC stripping guides, black smoke anodized double-foot snake guides and a reel seat with a hook keeper built in finish it off, and every rod ships with a rod sock and hard tube. TFO makes nine Legacy models from 3 to 8 wt and 8' to 9', including 8'6" 4 and 5 wt rods and a 9' 6 wt with a fighting butt. Which Legacy Should You Choose?

Dry flies on long leaders at distance, trout water where wind and range matter: TF 04 90 4 LE (9' 4 wt).

TF 04 90 4 LE - 9' 4 wt

The lightest Legacy we carry, about 2.9 oz per TFO. It is a 4 wt built for range rather than close-in finesse: TFO points it at dry flies cast a long way on long leaders on big western rivers, and at trout water where wind and distance are part of the day. It has the Handle B full wells cork grip.

Best for: dry flies at distance, long leaders, windy trout water.

Line pairing: A 4 wt weight-forward floating trout line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF4F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth MPX (WF4F).

TF 05 90 4 LE - 9' 5 wt

The all-round Legacy, about 3.0 oz per TFO. It covers dry flies at distance, indicator nymphing and multi-fly rigs, and streamers, which makes it the one to pick if this is your big-water trout rod. It has the Handle B full wells cork grip.

Best for: big-water trout, dries at distance, nymph rigs, streamers.

Line pairing: A 5 wt weight-forward floating trout line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF5F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth MPX (WF5F).

TF 06 90 4 LE - 9' 6 wt

The heaviest Legacy we carry, about 3.3 oz per TFO. TFO pitches the 6 wt for streamers, heavy nymph rigs and wind, on trout, bass and carp. This model has the Handle B full wells cork grip with no fighting butt; TFO's 9' 6 wt with a fighting butt is a separate model (TF 06 91 4 LE) that we do not list here.

Best for: streamers, heavy nymph rigs, windy days, trout, bass and carp.

Legacy vs Other TFO Fly Rods

TFO calls the earlier TFO LK Legacy the predecessor of the Legacy. Going by TFO's specs, the Legacy moves from a fast to an extra-fast action, from a high modulus carbon blank to one reinforced with Kevlar and graphene, and from stainless to SiC stripping guides, and it adds a hook keeper built into the reel seat. If you prefer a fast rather than extra-fast action, the LK Legacy is worth a look. On its Legacy page TFO also points to the TFO Solution, a moderate-fast freshwater rod, as the close-range partner to the Legacy's distance and power. What action is the Legacy?

Extra-fast, per TFO. It loads quickly and tracks straight, and is meant to hold its loop in wind and turn over long leaders.

What do the handle letters mean?

TFO labels Legacy grips A, B and C. Handle A is a half wells grip, Handle B is a full wells grip with no fighting butt, and Handle C is a full wells grip with a cork fighting butt. All three rods on this listing have Handle B. The letters do not mean the same thing as they did on the LK Legacy.

Does the 6 wt have a fighting butt?

No. The TF 06 90 4 LE we carry has the Handle B full wells grip without a fighting butt. TFO makes a separate 9' 6 wt with a fighting butt, the TF 06 91 4 LE.

Does it come with a case?

Yes. Every Legacy ships with a rod sock and a hard tube.

What is the warranty?

TFO backs the Legacy with its Full Lifetime Warranty, which covers breakage from defects in materials and workmanship for the life of the registered owner; TFO repairs or replaces those at no charge with proof of purchase. Accidents and normal wear are not covered, but TFO offers a replacement section or rod for a replacement fee.

Which weight should I choose?

The 9' 5 wt for most trout fishing on bigger water, the 4 wt when the job is dry flies at distance on long leaders, and the 6 wt for streamers, heavy rigs, wind, bass and carp.
